Oliver Jeffers has another hit with his newest book – This Moose Belongs to Me.
Obviously we don’t have any way of knowing this, but perhaps Wilfred is lonely or an only child, or maybe he just has an IMAGINATION. Anyway, Wilfred is a bit of a control freak and perhaps just a tad nerdy, but don’t let that put you off, because he is still totally lovable.
He decides that the moose, who he names Marcel, but of course, must belong to him, because, well…why not! Wilfred has rules for Marcel, which naturally he totally ignores, most of the time. But Wilfred and Marcel go along to get along, especially when it rains and Marcel provides excellent shelter or when Marcel uses his antlers to knock apples out of trees. Because, of course, that is what a moose would do, right? My deer (the herd of 30-50 who currently call our humble apple orchard HOME) they just stand up on their hind legs and help themselves to the reddest juiciest apples on my trees! Really!
Wilfred does have a little trouble, though, when he comes to the realization that Marcel actually may not belong to him. I don’t want to give it away – you will have to read the book to find out how he deals with that!
I love the artwork which is rich and varied and so appealing to children of all ages. If you and your small one are already Jeffers’ fans, he won’t disappoint you with This Moose Belongs to Me. And…if somehow you haven’t run across Mr. Jeffers yet, well, what are you waiting for, get cracking!
