Follow Follow A Book of Reverso Poems

GENIUS!

Have you ever heard of reverso poems? No. Well, neither had I. Chances are you haven’t heard of them, because they are relatively new, created by Marilyn Singer.Briefly, as she states at the end the book,” a reverso poem is made up of two poems. Read the first down and it says one thing. Read it back up, with changes only in punctuation and capitalization, and it means something completely different.” WOW!  As I have said here before, I have so much respect for poets who can take words and create magic with them. That is what happens in Follow Follow.

The Twelve poems in Follow Follow are all based on fairy tales and they are so much fun to read out loud. For example, try this one out:

Ready, Steady, Go!

That ridiculous loser!
I am not
a slowpoke.
Though I may be
the smallest bit distracted,
I can’t be
beat.
I’ve got rabbit feet to
take me to the finish line.

Take me to the finish line!
I’ve got rabbit feet to
beat.
I can’t be
the smallest bit distracted.
Though I may be
a slowpoke,
I am not
that ridiculous loser.

I mean really, this is fun, and gives you a reason to first read the fairy tale if your child isn’t already familiar with it. Ms. Singer does provide a short synopsis of each fairy tale at the end of the book which is quite helpful.

In these days of emailing, facebook messaging, and texting, I do think it is important for our little ones to be exposed to all kinds of literature and Marilyn Singer has made poetry fun, fun, fun. The illustrations by the very talented Josée Masse perfectly compliment the reverso poems.

I really hope that you and your child enjoy them as much as we have!

It would be fun to try to create your own reverso poem wouldn’t it?
