love LOVE Apple Pie?!? We do, well, that and peach pie, too. But since we have about 300 apple trees growing right outside our back door in the field, you can bet we have baked a few apple pies of our own here. Our Little Darling has been sooo excited to see the tiny apples forming on the trees! We were more than just a little worried when the De Recho came through that we might lose our apples again this year, but we were lucky!
I so was excited to find this book, The Apple Pie that Papa Baked by Lauren Thompson and illustrated by one of Cattail’s favorite illustrators, Jonathan Bean.
I was not at all familiar with Lauren Thompson, but you can find her here: www.laurenthompson.net where she also includes a recipe for her favorite apple pie.
If you like cumulative stories, and most children do, then I think you, and your little ones, will like this one too. It has that nice warm and friendly, sing-songy feel page after page as the story develops – the little girl and her father going through all the motions of getting ready to bake an apple pie.
Interestingly, the illustrator has chosen to use only three colors -black, caramel and the occasional pop of red all against a soft cream page. It makes me chuckle to think of all the times my children said “But I need more colors, Mom.” It is amazing actually how much an artist/illustrator can convey with the simplest of tools and the sparest use of color. Hmm, something to think about.
Have a look at this and be sure to check out Lauren’s Apple Pie recipe on her website – it’s good!
