The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind

I am really excited! Next week on October 24 at 7:00 P.M. the Rust Library in Leesburg, Virginia will be sponsoring a program called 1book 1community. This year, the book the Loudoun County Public Library has chosen is The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind.

This is a true story. The story of a young boy, William Kamkwamba, who refused to just accept the status quo. In his small village in Malawi, people were very poor. They had no electricity, no clean water, and they had very little to eat. But William did not let these things stand in his way. Instead, he took himself to the library (THE LIBRARY – thank goodness for Libraries!)  and with his dictionary in hand he read and read until he finally figured out how machines worked. ALL BY HIMSELF.

But – he didn’t stop there.

William Kamkwamba's Windmill

This is the windmill that William built! Isn’t that amazing? William can, and should, be an inspiration to us all. He is now in his final year at Dartmouth University.

If you have children and live in the Northern Virginia area, I urge you to come and meet William. His country, Malawi, is known as “The Warm Heart of Africa.” I hope that we can show him that we have warm hearts here, too.

He has a great message for all of us today – FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS!
