Calling All Animal Lovers – Have You Seen The Animal Book?

I don’t know about your children, but our children and our grandson LOVE animals. When they were little they couldn’t get enough of them – trips to the zoo, pets at home, a butterfly garden in Germany…if it had animals, we were going to see them. Last summer we took the Little Darling to the National Zoo in Washington. He was sooo excited and loved everything he saw. It is so much fun to see things through a child’s eyes, isn’t it?

So you know I was really excited when I heard about Steve Jenkins‘ new book, The Animal Book. I have included a short video that Steve Jenkins made that gives us a glimpse into the process behind making The Animal Book. I always think that it is so interesting to see how authors/artists work to bring a book to life.

If you have an animal lover in your home, I would encourage you to pick up a copy of this book. From an African Bee to a Yellow Tang you will meet animals that you know and I wager to say some that perhaps you have never heard of.  I especially love how animals are categorized in the book – from family (how animals get together to continue their species,) to animal senses (how animals use the senses we have, and some we don’t to help them eat, protect themselves, find shelter, etc.,) to animals predators and defenses, and animal extremes – the information contained in The Animal Book could easily keep a child (or adult) entertained for hours!

What’s your favorite animal? Did you know, by the way, that the pistol shrimp hunts with sound? It does! It waits until a small fish gets close, then snaps shut a special claw. This produces a noise so loud that the shock wave created stuns or kills  its prey.

Pick up a copy of The Animal Book…and let me know what YOUR favorite animal is!
