Aren’t we lucky? Eric Carle and 13 other illustrators that you might have run across in your reading, got together to make a really fun book – What’s Your Favorite Animal? After all, everyone does have a favorite animal, right? And…it is really fun to see that people are quite diverse in their animal choices – not everyone likes just dogs and cats – some people’s taste in animals runs to the more exotic…like Mo Willems who likes Amazonian Neotropical Lower River Tink-Tinks. What?!?! Well, the snake that Mo drew certainly seems to have liked it judging by the large bump in it!
I have been back and forth about what might be MY favorite illustration – it’s hard because there are several that really appeal to me – but if I had to choose just one, I think I would have to say the Penguins that Erin Stead drew are my favorite. And she’s right you know, when you go to the zoo, you really can stand for ever and become totally mesmerized by the penguins and their activity!
But children love animals and love stories about animals and so each illustrator has written something about their selection. Obviously the illustrations are amazing and if you don’t know some of the illustrators, this is a great way to see if their style appeals to you and your children.
Also included in the back of the book are short, fun biographies of each of the illustrators, along with a short history of The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. Located in Amherst, Massachusetts, this is the only museum in the United States devoted to children’s book illustrations. The proceeds from the sale of What’s your Favorite Animal will go to the museum. I, for one, think that a summer excursion to Massachusetts just might be in order.
