Making Your Own Paint…And Painting When It’s Too Cold To Go Outside

I didn’t have any paint suitable for Beanie to use on hand at home, so I thought that we would try making our own paint. If you have never made paint before – this was really easy.

Homemade Finger Paint

  • 3 Tablespoons Sugar
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 Cup Cornstarch
  • 2 Cups Water

Combine all the above ingredients in a small saucepan. Heat over medium until the mixture thickens. Let the mixture cool. Divide into jars and add food coloring to create the colors desired.

Have fun!

And we did have fun! Beanie had a good time…painting a hippo, making spiderwebs by flicking the brush around in a circle, and then he discovered that the flat foam brushes made excellent footprints. So he made trails of footprints all around the paper. We ended our painting session by covering his hands with paint and making handprints.

The best thing about this paint is that it washes off quickly and without any rubbing. This was a good activity for our morning on a day when it was TOO cold to play outside. What is your favorite/go-to activity when your children have to be inside?
