How Large Should a Photo Print Be? A Photographer’s Guide to Print Size
It is already March, and one quarter of the year has nearly passed. As I prepare for the upcoming season of street fairs and art markets, a basic philosophy of mine has resurfaced: a photograph is best appreciated when it is printed—and ideally printed large.
Of course, “large” is a relative term. The final size of a photographic print depends on several factors: the resolution of the image file, the subject matter, the printing medium, and the space where the photograph will be displayed. Still, I maintain that a print should be large enough for the viewer to step back and take in the image comfortably.
A New Year at Cattail Chronicles
ppy New Year, and thank you for continuing to support Cattail Chronicles. We truly appreciate being able to share our photography journey with such a thoughtful and engaged community. The past year brought monumental changes for us. Monique’s studio is now fully up and running, and she continues to expand her business at a steady pace. We also opened a small gallery inside Silver Paw Studio and attended our first arts and crafts fair as vendors.
Photographing the American Dipper
The target for our vlog video this afternoon was Gateway Natural Area. We had wanted to return for a couple of reasons. The first and biggest was to see if the Pygmy Owls had returned to nest in the picnic area. The second was to photograph Kingfishers, of which we had seen plenty in past visits. These goals were not to be met. Well, mostly not met. A park ranger would distract us by dangling the offer to see an American Dipper’s nest. The offer was way too tempting.
