A young bighorn sheep kid carefully makes its way down a steep, rocky cliff in Colorado's Big Thompson Canyon. We photographed this youngster late in the day as it negotiated the rocks one cautious step at a time, all under the watchful supervision of its mother.
Adult bighorn sheep move across terrain like this with remarkable confidence, but for a youngster, those skills have to be learned. Watching this kid study the rocks, test its footing, and slowly choose a path downward gave us a glimpse into that learning process.
