Bighorn sheep are remarkably well adapted to steep mountain terrain. Places that appear precarious and inhospitable to us provide them with food, shelter, and a refuge from danger. We photographed this ram as he moved along the slope, stopping to feed on the vegetation growing between the rocks.
Rather than separating the animal from his surroundings, this photograph places him firmly within them. The rocks, grasses, and shrubs become part of his portrait and help tell the story of an animal perfectly suited to its environment.
For us, these quieter encounters are one of the rewards of wildlife photography—a chance to observe an animal simply going about its everyday life.
